Last weekend was Emma’s first reining show of the year. Holly, her pretty gray mare, looked sleek and smooth. Emma sparkled in her new show shirt, as a new year of riding excitement began.
(Reining is defined as a judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a horse within the confines of a show arena. Contestants are required to run one of ten patterns. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360 degree spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse.)
If you like horses, you really should attend a show. It’s a blast to see the beauty and athleticism of both rider and horse. The folks that hang at horse shows are a friendly bunch that always have a supportive word for one another. There is usually a multitude of adorable dogs bouncing around, which of course always makes my heart smile. There are make-shift stores that sell snazzy horse bling, rows of horses in stalls waiting to be petted and made over, and a food shack that makes the best grilled pesto chicken sammie in town…even sans the bread!
Emma Rose came in middle of the pack this weekend. Holly was a bit sassy in the ring and Emma forgot to do an extra circle…oh well, she still looked stunning. Take a gander at some of the days sightings!
